Lagos Assembly Directs Sanwo-Olu to Enforce Environmental Laws

The Lagos State House of Assembly has directed the governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to enforce relevant environmental laws in order to address the issue of indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the state.
In a motion moved by the majority leader of House, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade titled “call for prosecution of perpetrators of indiscriminate refuse dumping across the state.”
Agunbiade noted that the essence of the motion is to give teeth and sanction for such an offender.
In his reaction, Hon. Ibrahim Layode representing Badagry Constituency 1, observed that rather than moving a motion to persuade the Chief Judge of the State to direct Magistrates for the application of community sentencing, the House should look into enforcing existing laws.
While ruling, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, the speaker of the House called on the Governor to direct the Commissioner, Ministry of Environment to act as the environmental law proscribed.
Layode also observed that community sentencing is not a standard of discipline as what is obtainable in a community might not be applicable in the next.
The plenary was thereafter adjourned to Tuesday, 19th November 2019.
