How Nigerian Doctors Successfully Separated Conjoined Twins in Abuja

A team of 78 medical officers had successfully separated conjoined twins – Goodness and Mercy Martins at the National Hospital in Abuja.

The two sisters were joined in the chest and abdomen and the surgery lasted for 12 hours.

Both are now certified okay to go home six weeks after surgery to separate the twins had happened in November last year but details have only just been released by the hospital, because they wanted to ensure there were no post surgery complications.

The surgery was delayed till November 2019 despite that the twins were born on August 13th due to some complications revealed the pediatric surgeon Emmanuel Ameh.

Ameh said the girls underwent surgery to repair the area that had been torn open at the navel and doctors had to wait for many weeks for them to recover from the procedure because the twins were born with a condition known as omphalocele – a birth defect that left a section of their intestine sticking outside their navel.

Plastic surgeons on the team were said to be worried that a large section of the girls’ chest would be open and at risk of being infected once they were separated and they had to create artificial skin large enough to cover the area, which took several weeks.

While talking to CNN, Ameh said “we needed to determine if they could live independently when they are separated. We found out that they were sharing a diaphragm and one liver was serving both of them, but all other organs were separate.”

The Federal Government of Nigeria has granted amnesty to 2,600 inmates at the Correctional centres across the country.

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, made this known during a press conference.

The affected inmates includes:

Inmates that are 60 years and above
Those suffering from ill-health likely to terminate in death
Convicts serving 3 years and above and have less than 6 months to serve
Inmate with mental issues
Inmates with option of fine not exceeding ₦50,000

41 Federal inmates and 29 FCT inmates making a total of 70 inmates who met the above criteria will however be released today from the Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja.

This amnesty does not apply to inmates sentenced for violent extreme offences such as terrorism, kidnapping, armed banditry, rape, human trafficking, culpable homicide and so on.

The Governors of the 36 states under whose jurisdiction most of the inmates were incarcerated are expected to complete the exercise in line with the federal principle.

LAWMA Rewards Outstanding Sweeper

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has handsomely rewarded an outstanding highway sweeper, Fasasi Raheemat Oluwabukola, on behalf of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, incident commander of the state.

Raheemat was sighted and photographed along Dolphin/Osbourne Road, her operational corridor, by Ms. Adebisi Awoniyi, a resident of Dolphin Estate, a photo that later went viral on the social media, few days ago.

Speaking during the brief presentation, the MD of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, noted that the recognition was to appreciate Raheemat’s constant diligence and impassioned service, as attested by Ms. Awoniyi, who claimed to have regularly observed her, during her daily work-out sessions.

The LAWMA boss noted further, that there was reward for diligent hard work, because one could never tell who was watching at any point in time.

Responding, Raheemat expressed profound gratitude to Mr Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for the rather unexpected recognition, stressing that it was most unexpected, as she was only doing her duty to the best of her ability.
