Senators across the parties are planning to protest the recent increase in electricity tariff and fuel price.
To this end, the lawmakers from the PDP and APC are converging to hold an emergency session to address this development following the mounting tension in the country over the increases.
Recall that the Petroleum Pipeline and Product Marketing Company (PPMC), a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporations (NNPC), had on Wednesday announced a new ex-depot price of ₦151.56k for petrol.
However, some filling stations owned by Independent marketers dispensed the product at between ₦162 and ₦164 per litre, depending on their location.
Some lawmakers have confirmed that the emergency session had become necessary to address the agitations in the land occasioned by the hikes.
While it was gathered that the leadership of the Senate was worried over the development, some senators disclosed that they were under pressure from their constituencies to protest the hike and seek immediate reversal.
Senate spokesman, Ajibola Basiru, in a chat with newsmen, said he was currently out of town and could not confirm if there were plans to convene an emergency sitting.
“President of the Senate called me a while ago. I’m not sure what he wanted to discuss with me. It may have been related to that. But I can’t tell. The Senate committee chairman on Rules and Business can confirm that,” he said.
