Nigerian musician, Azeez Fashola popularly known as Naira Marley, has hosted the PRO of the Nigeria Police Force after his cancelled protest on the agitation to end police brutality in the country which he said was fueled by armed robbers.
Naira Marley noted that there was no need to disband the Special Anti-Robbery Squad unit of the police and had earlier said there are good people within the Police Force as well.
Recall that SARS is widely known to be notorious for arbitrary killings and other rights violations of innocent civilians in a bid to extort them.
While monitoring the Instagram Live Session on Tuesday by O’News, the Police PRO, DCP Frank Mba encouraged that persons nearby any police brutality can record but should be mindful of their safety and verbal arguments should not be made with the officers.
Mba also noted that the Force is going digital soon with some experiments on-going towards installing body cameras on some patrol vehicles in locations like Abuja, Lagos which will help them to gather video and pictorial evidences from the streets.
When asked about an incident within Ajah, Mba could not confirm that as he was not on sight and requested to get the location for effective monitoring by the Area Commander and all efforts must be in collaboration with the Force for effective security.
The Police PRO also reiterated that routine patrols will still be seen around and no officer will be seen stationed rather “they will patrol and then return back to the station, that is the new normal.”
Naira Marley however added that concerns around COVID-19 also led to the cancellation of the protest earlier billed for Tuesday morning.
He said, “We need to reform SARS. Let’s be reasonable, are you an armed robber? Why will you say they should end SARS. If you end SARS, it means they should end EFCC and other agencies. All we have to do is get them off the road.
“Nobody threatened me, I know my rights. What stopped me was thinking of the safety of everybody and I saw that the police issued a statement.”
