The Duke of Edinburgh and husband to the English monarch, Queen Elizabeth of England, Prince Philip is dead aged 99.
Queen Elizabeth II described him as her “strength and stay” throughout their long marriage.
The was treated for a heart condition in hospital earlier this year.
In a statement, the palace said: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
“His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.
“Further announcements will made in due course.
“The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”
Last month, the Duke of Edinburgh was discharged from hospital after a month-long stay to treat a heart condition.
Philip, the son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice, Philip was born on the Greek island of Corfu in 1921, but primarily raised in Britain.
He renounced his right to the Greek and Danish thrones in 1947 and took his mother’s surname, Mountbatten. Philip married Elizabeth Windsor, a distant cousin, later that year – five years before her ascension to the British throne in 1952.
He became father to Prince Charles and grandfather to Prince Harry and Prince William. He was also father to Princess Anne and Princes Andrew and Edward.
Philip has been absent from the Royals’ public engagements for some time, officially retiring from public duties in August 2017.
He is survived by the Queen, as well as their four children, eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren – the youngest of whom, Lucas Philip Tindall, was born last month to Mike Tindall and Zara Phillips.
