Africa’s Youngest Serving Presidents in 2022

With the latest coup which took place on September 30, 2022 in Burkina Faso, 34-year-old Captain Ibrahim Traore is now the Military Head of State and has also become the World’s Youngest President.

The military junta appointed him as the President and the constitution was been dissolved.

Here are a list of the youngest Presidents currently in office in Africa.

1. Burkina Faso’s 34-year-old President Ibrahim Traore

Traore was appointed as president of Burkina Faso after Paul-Henri Damiba was ousted.

2. Chad’s 38-year-old President Mahamat Deby

Mahamat Deby

Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, also known as Mahamat Kaka, is a Chadian army general.

He is the president of the Transitional Military Council and the is the son of the late Chadian President Idriss Déby.

He was born on 1 January 1984.

3. Mali’s 39-year-old President Assimi Goita

Assimi Goita

The Malian military officer who has been interim President of Mali since 28 May 2021.

Goïta was the leader of the National Committee for the Salvation of the People, a military junta that seized power from former president Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta in the 2020 Malian coup d’état.

He was born in 1983.

4. Guinea’s 42-year-old President Mamady Doumbouya

He is serving as the interim president of Guinea since 1 October 2021.

Doumbouya led a coup d’état on 5 September 2021 that overthrew the previous president, Alpha Condé.

He is a member of the Guinean Special Forces Group and a former French legionnaire.
