PDP Appoints 26-Member Disciplinary Committee to Restore Party Order

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken significant steps to restore discipline within its ranks by appointing a 26-member disciplinary committee. The move comes in response to internal turmoil that has plagued the party since its 2023 presidential primary.

In a bid to reassert control and stability, the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) has established a 26-member disciplinary committee. The committee, led by Chief Tom Ikimi, is tasked with restoring order and enforcing party discipline, which has been notably absent in recent years. This was confirmed during a press conference in Abuja, addressed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba.

The need for a disciplinary committee arises from the ongoing internal conflicts that have troubled the PDP, particularly following its 2023 presidential primary. The primary saw former Vice President Atiku Abubakar secure the party’s nomination with 371 votes, defeating his closest rival, former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, who received 237 votes. The aftermath of the primary led Wike to spearhead a coalition of five governors in a public campaign against both Atiku and the PDP, exacerbating tensions within the party.

The newly appointed committee includes prominent figures within the PDP, with Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, serving as the committee’s secretary. Other notable members include former Kano State Governor Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, Chief Olabode George (Board of Trustees), Rt. Hon. Margaret Icheen (Board of Trustees), Senator Effiong Bob, and former Acting National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje.

In addition to the disciplinary committee, the NWC has also constituted a National Reconciliation Committee, chaired by Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola. Both committees are set to be inaugurated on Wednesday, 21 August 2024, at the National Executive Committee (NEC) Hall, National Secretariat, Abuja.

During the announcement, Ologunagba urged all PDP leaders, stakeholders, and members to remain steadfast in their commitment to the party’s vision and principles. He emphasised that these committees are crucial to ensuring the growth, development, and stability of the PDP and the broader nation.
