Nigeria’s three leading opposition figures are reportedly in discussions over a potential merger ahead of the 2027 presidential election, according to Ibrahim Abdullahi, the National Spokesman for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
During an interview with Channels Television on Monday, 2 September, Abdullahi revealed that former presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar (PDP), Peter Obi (Labour Party), and Rabiu Kwankwaso (New Nigeria People’s Party) are considering setting aside personal ambitions to form a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The proposed alliance aims to “salvage Nigerians from hunger” and address the growing socio-economic challenges in the country.
Reflecting on the past, Abdullahi expressed regret over the PDP’s internal conflicts that led to the departure of key figures like Kwankwaso, Obi, and former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike.
He suggested that if these leaders had remained within the PDP, the party might have secured victory in the last election against APC’s Bola Tinubu.
“We’ve lost Kwankwaso, we’ve lost Peter Obi… If they were still with us, we would have won the election, and Nigerians would not be facing the current despair and despondency,” Abdullahi stated.
When questioned about efforts to reunite Obi, Kwankwaso, Wike, and others with the PDP, Abdullahi confirmed ongoing discussions. He hinted at meetings between Obi, Atiku, and other political figures, signalling a possible reconciliation and alliance.
“One of them would concede for the other, and then we would have a clear direction. Our main concern as a party is to rescue Nigerians from this despair, hunger, and insecurity that the current administration has failed to address,” Abdullahi added.
