The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr. Joe Ajaero. Reports indicate that Ajaero was detained at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja while preparing to travel to the United Kingdom for a Trade Union Congress (TUC) conference.
According to sources, after his arrest, Ajaero was transferred to the custody of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).
This development follows a prior police invitation extended to Ajaero in connection with allegations of “criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.” The invitation, dated August 19, was signed by ACP Adamu Mu’azu on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Intelligence.
Despite Ajaero attending the police summons, his lawyer, Mr. Maxwell Opara, stated that the authorities later withdrew the initial allegations. However, the reasons behind his recent arrest by the DSS remain unclear.
