The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has reopened its verification portal for nurses and midwives, allowing them to submit verification requests online.
The portal, which had been deactivated in February, was restored on Friday, as confirmed by a check on the NMCN website.
This reopening is a relief for many Nigerian nurses and midwives working abroad, who had faced legal consequences due to the inability to verify their certificates, affecting their visa conditions and employment.
Some nurses in countries like the UK and the US were even forced to return to Nigeria because of the portal’s closure.
Nurse Anthony Ijeoma from Nursingworld Nigeria praised the efforts of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) in pushing for the reopening, acknowledging the NMCN for responding to the concerns.
In February, the NMCN had introduced new guidelines for certificate verification, requiring nurses and midwives to have at least two years of post-qualification experience. Additionally, letters of good standing were to be sent directly to the NMCN’s Registrar/CEO from the applicant’s workplace and nursing institution.
The NANNM National President, Michael Nnachi, highlighted the association’s ongoing demands, including the payment of salaries to NMCN staff, the creation of a special salary structure for nurses, and a review of professional allowances.
