Hunpe Decries the Deplorable State of ASCON

Mr. Babatunde Hunpe, the lawmaker representing Badagry Constituency at the Federal House of Representatives has decried the deplorable state of ASCON in Topo, Badagry.
In a letter addressed to the Acting Head of Service (HOS) of the Federation, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, Hunpe described ASCON as the only legacy in Badagry which must not be allowed to die.
He appealed to Federal Government to ensure prompt release of funds to enable the college to achieve its mandate of enhancing manpower development in the public service.
The pioneer public service management training institution in Nigeria, ASCON (Administrative Staff College Of Nigeria) started operations on June 1 1972 but had only produced one (1) indigenous Chief Executive from 1,017 ever since.
According to the lawmaker, the federal character policy should also consider offering employment to indigenes of the host community of the college.
He noted that lack of adequate funding had deprived the college of functional vehicles, modern e-library and functional internet facilities.
“The college is not linked to the national electricity grid and there is lack of capacity building for lecturers in terms of overseas training” Hunpe said.
Hunpe also noted that there was low patronage of ASCON courses because some public service institutes were rated above the college for no just cause.
“As a matter of priority, the college had assisted federal ministries and parastatals to develop and build up their own training units,” Hunpe concluded.
