Popular microblogging platform, Twitter, has been suspended in Nigeria indefinitely by the Federal Government.
The news was announced by the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed through his spokesperson Segun Adeyemi.
“The persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence” Lai Mohammed cited in his statement.
“The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has also been directed to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria”, the statement posit.
Despite the announcement, Twitter is however still active within the country as at the time this report is updated.
The suspension is coming up after Twitter had deleted President Muhammadu Buhari’s Post on the civil war and this was condemned by the presidency.
The FG also noted that the platform is acting on “double standards” and that Twitter’s mission in Nigeria is suspicious.
