Nigerians Lament Scarcity Of New Naira Notes In Banks, ATMs Few Weeks To Deadline For Old Ones

With a few weeks to the deadline given by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for the use of the old naira notes, a cross-section of Nigerians across the country have lamented the scarcity of the new naira notes.

Another awful twist is that the few notes in circulation are not widely accepted by most of the informal sectors.

A cross section of reactions from Nigerians even shows that some are confused on the denominations that are redesigned – they think the ₦100 is part while some lamented the scarcity of the notes.

Those who have seen it at some point are initially rejecting the new naira notes because of the low awareness since they sometimes feel it’s fake or they are being scammed and until there’s an intervention from persons nearby, it sometimes end up being a fight.

Recall that the CBN stipulated January 31, 2023, as the deadline for issuance and circulation of the old ₦200, ₦500 and ż,000 denominations of the country’s currency following the introduction of new banknotes.

However, as of January 4, 2023, some Nigerians across the country are lamenting the scarcity of the new naira notes, with some calling it a scam, especially as they reportedly fade if touched by water.
