Shanty Town is the newly 6 episode Nigerian series on Netflix released Saturday, 21st January 2023.
It has been trending since its release earlier in the day, but really is it worth your time? Let’s explore!
Shanty Town features Ini Edo, Chidi Mokeme, Nse Ikpe-Etim, Nancy Isime, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Zubby Michael, Peter Okoye, Shaffy Bello, Shola Sobowale, Ali Nuhu, and Mercy Eke.
It’s a violent series that is centred on an undercover detective on a revenge mission.
The detective infiltrates a crime ring and uncovers damning information on their activities and associates.
The movie was written by Xavier Ighorodje, Donald Tombia, ShirleyAnn Ede, Ayomikun Paseda, produced by Chinenye Chichi Nworah and directed by Dimeji Ajibola.
In terms of production, sounds, cinematography, props, stunts, and delivery, it lived up to the hype and definitely pass for a modern Nollywood movie.
Nearly forgotten Nollywood star, Chidi Mokeme, played the villain character Scar and he delivered brilliantly just as every other character did justice to their roles.
Nse Ikpe Etim was just awesome in her role just like Shaffy Bello who powerfully delivered hers.
RMD and then, P Square’s Peter Okoye were also sweet and charming.
The conversations of Ini Edo and Nse Ikpe Etim in Ibibio was so amusing to watch – the movie explored a healthy exploration of Nigerian indigenous languages and that’s a win.
It was unnecessarily too long and the storyline not fascinating to some extent with no gradual progression.
Some random action sequences and supernatural elements were absurd and have nothing to do with the agenda presented.
There were several unexplained parts and disjoints, like seeing that Jackie sent a voice note to Shalewa and it didn’t occur to her all along to even return Jackie’s missed calls or noticed the voice note all along if they were truly as close as depicted until Inem mentioned it?
Also the fight scene at the end was too prolonged and somewhat unrealistic.
Id only they had spent less time on montages of women dancing and showing off their butts!
It was so obvious that the producers were purposely putting in shots of naked women and their body parts in almost every scene, to what end? Get male viewers horny?
There’s no need having nudity irrelevantly just to strategically make a buzz about it.
It might have worked for Anikulapo as it got many talking and had more people going to check out the movie because of the scene.
The Shalewa nudity scene (even though it is a so-called body double) was totally not needed and added no value to the storyline, on a second thought.
Reactions on Social Media
Nonskylazz: Nancy Isime could be ambitious but not to this extent…I doubt if she is same person RMD is comfortably weighing her bre@st.
Buchy Chukwuedo: So really, you guys believed that’s her body and not someone else with a touch of her face for editing..chai, I can’t believe you guys fell for it.
Uzor Wabara: I don’t need a prophet to tell me that the naked person isn’t @nancyisimeh it’s a double or whatever they call it in filmmaking. Besides I just noticed something different about the body sef.
Ayeeshaliq: I can’t get this off my head.
“Look at you, different bra on different pant, they didn’t tell you I only do match”😭😭😭😭
RMD is mad 🤣🤣🤣 #ShantyTown
Jessica: Chidi Mokeme deserves multiple awards for his role in Shanty Town. He bodied the role of the most terrifying villain to ever Grace Nigerian cinemas. It was almost like he wasn’t even acting 👏 👏 👏
Emmanuel Maduneme: People don’t talk enough about @NseIkpeEtim ‘s range. She has to be one of the most prolific actresses in Nollywood. #ShantyTown
Bobby Ceesar: Shanty Town looks like a fluid mashup of King of Boys and Oloture. The writers expertly borrowed story angles from both films to create this master piece
Chidi Mokeme literally performed like his life depended on it. His transition from old to new Nollywood is amazing
King Hush: Tiwa had the same issue, someone with a kid, she leaked her nudes to the internet and everyone saw it. It was a disgrace to her son! Now Nancy isime, is displaying her nudity all round the media and she thinks it’s sweet! Well, the generation is cursed! My words are final!
