With the death of the Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu on Wednesday, 27th December 2023, NewStori reflects on some governors who met their end while still serving.
1. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State
Akeredolu is the latest in the list haven died of leukemia.
He was first sworn in as governor on February 24, 2017 after defeating Eyitayo Jegede of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He was then reelected on Saturday, October 10, 2020 alongside the current acting Governor, Lucky Ayedatiwa.
2. Patrick Yakowa of Kaduna State
Yakowa was the governor of Kaduna State from 2010 to 2012 before he met his end in a helicopter crash while returning from a funeral.
Coincidentally as Akeredolu, Yakowa died in December but this time, his was 15th December 2012.
He crashed along with the former National Security Adviser, General Owoye Andrew Azazi (rtd) while they were flying from Bayelsa State to Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
They were returning from the funeral of Oronto Douglas’ father in Beyelsa State when the incident occurred.
3. Mamman Bello Ali of Yobe State
Just like Akeredolu, Bello died of leukemia while receiving treatment at a hospital in Florida, United States.
He was a senator who had represented Yobe South Senatorial District between 1999 and 2007.
In 2007, he contested and won the governorship election in Yobe under the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and was in office until his death in 2009.
